Expert shares perspective on post-war settlement in Ukraine

MINSK, 27 May (BelTA) – The situation on the Ukrainian front shows that the end of the conflict is not far off. So focus should be placed on the post-war settlement, economist and analyst Serghei Banari said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
"If we talk about the image of the future, we need to realize that the world we used to know - the unipolar world and the dominance of the West have faded into oblivion. All those people who are waiting for this world to return are dead weight. They need to be removed from their positions, no matter how high these offices are. They are dangerous, because they are the handbrake that prevents progress and movement into the future," Serghei Banari said.

The analyst believes that the Ukrainian conflict is at the final stage, so it is important to think more and more about the future: "Post-war times are always a threat to us. We always win the war for war and, unfortunately, usually lose the war for peace. We need to draw conclusions and prepare for the war for peace."
Serghei Banari suggested setting up institutions that will apply the tools of soft and smart power. There are certain tools, he added, which we may not like, but which are simply necessary for the state and its existence.

"I will remind you that the creation of the atomic bomb in the USSR was handled by a special committee headed by Beria. Scientists said that this was a terrible weapon but necessary. Only the availability of such weapons can guarantee peace and stability," the analyst emphasized. “The same goes for soft or smart power. They are much needed but, as a rule, we underperform here. Now we should make emphasis on it, because the situation on the Ukrainian front is already clear. The only question is the line of demarcation and the length or width of the buffer zone.”

Serghei Banari recalled the expression: good politicians prepare for the next elections immediately after the polls close. "I am convinced that it is necessary to start thinking about the post-war arrangement even before hostilities break out. Sooner or later any war ends with negotiations, signing of documents," he concluded.
