
MINSK, 6 July (BelTA) – The 7th Belarusian peat football tournament kicked off the village of Pravdinsky in Pukhovichi District, BelTA learned from the Energy Ministry of Belarus.
The tournament is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War. A total of 29 teams are involved in the sport.
Belarusian Energy Minister Denis Moroz said: “Today, 3,000 people work in the peat industry. They provide 4% of the total fuel and energy consumption mix of our country, allowing replacing natural gas and other types of energy resources”.

According to the Energy Ministry, Belarus occupies a leading position in peat production. In terms of the peat fuel briquettes output the country ranks first in the world. Peat briquettes are a socially important product They are used in social facilities and more than 200,000 households in small towns and rural communities. More than 50% of briquettes and dried peat output goes to cement plants, which allows replacing imported natural gas and coal and saving about Br2 million annually.
In January-June 2025 Belarus produced 500,000 tonnes of peat.

He added that about 30,000 people live in the small towns and communities that host peat-producing enterprises. They consider themselves involved in the peat production in one degree or another. “For them we’ve set up the national peat football tournament. It's a fascinating event. A very tough game and a very spectacular event,” the minister said.
